Kenyan parents who would like their children to learn Karate can do so through classes at a kids karate centre in parklands.
“We started last month,” said Jennifer, one of the administrators at the centre. “And so far the response has been overwhelming; we started with three kids and now we have eight kids in the class.”
The centre was started by Zilino Michele, who was inspired to do so after he found children idling in the gym while waiting for their parents who were at the fitness classes. “He wanted the children to have an activity that would keep them busy as they waited for their parents,” said Jennifer. “Plus his daughter is a karate enthusiast and she had always wanted to take part in it.”
For parents who are concerned that the karate might be a violent activity for their child to take part in, it is not only about learning to fight it teaches children self discipline and is a good way of socializing. According to article title; The Benefits of Martial Arts on family website on parenting website, parenting.com; activities like tae kwon do, kung fu and aikido are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. The martial arts actually help teach self-discipline and socialization skills.
The karate lessons are Sh500 per session and Sh2500 per month on Saturdays from 10am to 11am. And while the children are learning karate, parents can also attend fitness classes. “We have yoga, zumba and aerobics among other activities.”
They are located off Limuru Road on Valley View, Park office, first floor.
