| Nature Kenya takes families to Hells Gate and Laikipia |
|
Nature Kenya is organizing family trips to the Rift Valley this month and over the Easter holiday, with adventure trips to explore the cliffs and hot springs of Hells Gate, and a trip including bird walks, nature walks, swamp visits and other activities at the Bobong campsite in Laikipia.  Phyllis, in charge of organizing the trips, said they wanted to ‘diversify’ and visit places that people do not usually visit, to make the trips more exciting and adventurous. ‘People make trips to Naivasha, but we wanted places where people do not usually go on their own,’ she said The Hells Gate trip is a one day trip, scheduled for 20th March, with the deadline for registration on 16th March. This day trip is a family trip, and kids from ten years can join, ‘so long as one can walk’. Famous for its hot springs and raptor breeding grounds, Hells Gates National Park sits south of Lake Naivasha, approximately 90 kilometers from Nairobi. The Park is home to animals that include buffaloes, zebras, elands, hartebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, giraffes, baboons, serval cats and antelopes; as well as over 100 bird species. Other major attractions at the park include cliffs, the gorge walk, caves, Olkaria Geothermal Station and Fischer’s Tower, a 45m high tower made of basalt rock that offers a variety of training climbs. Other activities at the park include cycling and rides, but members will have to pay extra for these activities. The cycling fee is Sh500 per person. The Easter excursion will be a 4-day trip to Bobong Campsite in Laikipia, from 1st to 4th April. The campsite is situated on Ol Maisor Ranch, a family ranch north of Rumuruti, on a small escarpment that over looks the Ewaso Narok Swamps, the Laikipia plains, Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges. The place is perfect for bird watching as it was rated 3rd in Kenya’s bird watch count in 2003. There are various activities available at the camp including camel riding and safaris, mountain biking and ox carting, nature walks and swamp visits. Members will come up with a program of activities during the trip, said Phyllis, but charges for the activities will be separate, although at ‘very good rates.’ Charges for the Easter excursion are Sh8500 per person; including kids aged 7years and above, to cater for transport, food and camping site. Members should carry their own camping gear, refreshments and toiletries. The deadline for paying for this trip is 19th March 2010. To pay for either of the trips, visit the Nature Kenya offices at the Nairobi National Museums on Museum hill, or pay though Nature Kenya’s MPESA business number 100300, then call 020 374 6090 to confirm. |
